Mumbai’s Coastal Road To Get Final Link: New Dadar-Worli Underpass To Open by May

Mumbai’s ambitious Coastal Road project is nearing full integration with the upcoming launch of a 550-metre-long vehicular underpass, which is expected to become operational by early May, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The underpass, 11 metres wide, is designed to serve motorists travelling from Dadar and Prabhadevi towards the Mumbai Coastal Road, offering a seamless connection to both the southern tip of the city and the western suburbs.

This underpass is the only one included in the 10.58-km Coastal Road project and is a critical component aimed at addressing future traffic needs. Vehicles from the Sewri-Worli elevated corridor will have easy access to this new route, reducing travel time and congestion in key areas like Worli. Once operational, commuters from Dadar can bypass the current bottlenecks at Worli and Haji Ali interchanges, directly entering the coastal road corridor.

The underpass runs beneath Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, linking J. K. Kapur Chowk to the vehicular interchange at Bindoo Madhav Thackeray Chowk near the Worli Seaface. Civic officials confirmed that final touches—including lane marking, lighting installations, and wall surfacing—are underway and progressing swiftly.

Once opened, the tunnel will cater exclusively to southbound traffic from the Dadar and Prabhadevi areas. It is expected to significantly decongest the Worli stretch, offering vehicles direct connectivity to either Bandra via the Bandra-Worli Sea Link or to Marine Drive and Nariman Point via the southern arm of the Coastal Road. With this final link in place, the entire Coastal Road system will offer motorists a continuous, high-speed route across Mumbai’s coastline.
