The Maharashtra Urban Development Department has approved a proposal worth Rs 80 crore from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), paving the way for Mumbai to host its first dedicated bird park since independence. The recreation area with an aviary motif will be built in Mulund, close to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park’s eastern edge.
Spread across 4.4 acres (17,958 sq m) in Nahur, the project will feature a bird enclosure covering 10,859 sq m, home to 206 birds from 18 species, including rare and exotic varieties such as the Red-Breasted Parakeet, Blossom-Headed Parakeet, Malabar Grey Hornbill, White Peacock, Black Swan, Galah Cockatoo, Ostrich, and Scarlet Macaw. An additional 3,728 sq m will be designated for a recreational zone, offering a naturalistic, educational space for children and families.
The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has already cleared the proposal, and detailed planning is currently in progress. The initiative aims to serve as a satellite facility to the heavily visited Byculla Zoo, which recorded 24.2 lakh visitors in 2024, with an estimated annual revenue of Rs 5.9 crore. By dispersing footfall and enhancing wildlife education, the Mulund bird park is expected to significantly boost the city’s environmental engagement and tourism appeal.
The Urban Development Department granted final approval in April 2024, after the BMC revised the land reservation status to ‘zoo’. Construction is expected to commence later this year, with completion targeted for late 2026.
When finished, the bird park will be a major addition to Mumbai’s green space and educational system, providing both locals and visitors with an immersive, one-of-a-kind look into the world of birds.
