Uttan-Virar Sea Link Gets Approval to Transform North Mumbai Access

Phase One of the Uttan-Virar Sea Link (UVSL), a significant coastal corridor intended to improve connectivity and promote regional growth in North Mumbai, has received approval from the Maharashtra government. The project, which was approved at the 159th meeting of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is expected to reduce traffic and the amount of time it takes to get from Uttan via Vasai to Virar.

With a sea link of 24.35 km and approach roads stretching from Uttan (9.32 km), Vasai (2.5 km), and Virar (18.95 km), Phase One of the UVSL will span a total of 55.12 km.

The project is expected to cost ₹87,427 crore (Rs 874.27 billion) in total. A hybrid funding mechanism will be used, with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) providing 72% of the funding and the Maharashtra government and MMRDA contributing the remaining 28%.

In addition to cutting down on travel time, the sea link is anticipated to open up economic prospects by promoting regional emergency response, industrial growth, and real estate development. By establishing connections with important motorways, such as the Delhi-Mumbai Motorway, the UVSL would also improve intercity connectivity and fortify the transportation network between Mumbai and other major cities.
