The Maharashtra government is evaluating a proposal to build a double-decker road-cum-rail bridge over Vasai Creek, a transformative move aimed at strengthening connectivity between Mumbai and Virar. The envisioned structure would integrate two major infrastructure projects: the Uttan-Virar Sea Link (UVSL) and Metro Line 13, creating a seamless transport corridor in the region.
The UVSL, sanctioned by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), will be an eight-lane expressway connecting Uttan to Virar, ultimately linking to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Parallelly, Metro Line 13 will span 23 kilometres from Shivaji Nagar in Mira Road to Virar, offering much-needed relief to the overburdened Western Railway line.
By merging both projects into a unified bridge, the government aims to optimise infrastructure planning, reduce travel time, and boost regional economic development. The bridge is expected to feature a metro rail system on the upper deck and a vehicular road on the lower deck, providing an efficient and space-saving solution for urban transport.
Officials from MMRDA suggest that this integrated model will significantly enhance mobility while opening up new growth opportunities in the northern part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is likely to fund the project, which underscores its strategic importance.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis noted that the proposed structure aligns with the state’s vision for a more connected, sustainable, and future-ready urban infrastructure network.
