Mumbai’s Underground Metro Line-3 Brings Speed, Sustainability & Growth

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently inaugurated the newly extended stretch of Mumbai Metro Aqua Line-3, connecting Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli. This milestone marks a significant phase in the development of the 33.5-km fully underground metro corridor that runs from Aarey in the north to Worli in the south.

Aimed at transforming intra-city travel, Metro Line-3 traverses some of Mumbai’s busiest commercial and residential zones, including SEEPZ, MIDC, Kalina University, the airport, Dharavi, Dadar, and the Siddhivinayak area. The new segment is expected to drastically cut travel time between Aarey and Worli to just 39 minutes, offering relief from the gruelling 90-minute surface commutes that many currently face.

This underground line is more than a transport initiative—it reflects Mumbai’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive infrastructure. Featuring regenerative braking and energy-efficient lighting, Metro Line-3 supports India’s climate goals and contributes to the city’s transition toward zero-emission urban transit.

Urban planners see the metro as a key enabler of balanced growth, improving connectivity between job hubs like BKC and residential areas like Kalina. Real estate demand along the route is already rising, driven by improved accessibility.

According to Rajkumar Singh of Anarock, “Line-3 bridges the city’s job-residence divide, eases congestion, and boosts land value in underdeveloped pockets.”

Beyond economic gains, the metro enhances safety, comfort, and access to essential services for millions. With more metro projects in the pipeline, Line Line-3 sets the tone for building an integrated, climate-friendly transit system that prioritises people and future-ready urban planning.
