The Breach Candy Residents Forum (BCRF) has submitted a revised parking plan for the Bhulabhai Desai Road and Breach Candy area to the authorities. This proposal, which includes overground parking facilities for a total of 867 vehicles, comes after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) halted its plan to construct a two-storey underground parking lot along the Coastal Road.
As reported by The Free Press Journal on May 15, the residents had previously prepared an alternative plan for submission to the BMC. “The initial proposal was designed to accommodate around 250 vehicles. After discussions, we revised the plan and submitted it to the BMC and Traffic Police. We conducted site visits with the senior traffic inspector from Tardeo on Monday and are arranging a meeting with the BMC Commissioner soon,” said Breach Candy resident N. Lakhani.
The parking plan is divided into two categories: ‘Residents Pay & Park zones’ and ‘Visitors Pay & Park zones’. Five locations are proposed for resident parking, including areas behind the Indian Oil petrol pump, the L&T site office, in front of Signature Garden, Mona Apartment Lane, and the Akruti Pay & Park facility. These will collectively accommodate a maximum of 195 cars.
Visitor parking is planned at Setalvad Lane, Amarsons Garden Lane, Mazda and Dil Pazir, Sehar Agiary Lane, BCH Parking, Navroze, Akruti, and the Haji Ali underground parking facility, with a total capacity for 672 vehicles.
Lakhani emphasised, “The Coastal Road from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to Marine Drive will open for traffic in July. The promenade alongside the Coastal Road will also soon be accessible to the public, resulting in increased traffic and visitors to Breach Candy and the surrounding areas. We urge the authorities to implement this parking plan promptly.”
The proposal follows the BMC’s request for an alternative after the original underground parking plan was scrapped due to strong objections from residents, citing concerns over traffic congestion in the area.
