June 9, 2025: A key infrastructure upgrade is nearing completion in Mumbai as the 5.08-kilometre double-decker flyover connecting New Link Road near Infinity Mall in Andheri West to Poonam Nagar on the Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) enters its final stages. Initially launched by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to address traffic congestion between Andheri West and Jogeshwari East, the project was later transferred to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to ensure seamless coordination with Metro Line 6, which runs along the same route.
While BMC completed 0.93 kilometres of the stretch, MMRDA is now executing the remainder in two parts. The project’s highlight is a 2.58-kilometre double-decker structure accommodating road traffic below and the elevated Metro Line 6 above. Executed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), this section is about 80% complete, with an estimated cost of Rs 304 crore.
The remaining 1.55 kilometres includes single-level flyovers, approach ramps, and a 120-metre cable-stayed bridge over the Western Express Highway and Metro Line 7. This phase, awarded to J Kumar Infraprojects, is around 39% complete, with a projected cost of Rs 378.7 crore (excluding GST).
Construction is being undertaken in challenging conditions, including dense JVLR traffic, restricted work hours, and complex coordination with the operational Metro Line 7. Further obstacles include encroachment clearances and uncharted underground utilities.
To fast-track benefits, MMRDA has planned phased commissioning—Phase I, from Infinity Mall to the JVLR junction, is expected by December 2025, while Phase II, involving the cable-stayed bridge, is due by June 2026.
Once complete, the flyover will provide signal-free connectivity between Andheri and Powai, reduce travel time and emissions, and enhance east–west mobility—advancing Mumbai’s sustainable and integrated urban transport vision under the “Mumbai in Minutes” initiative.
