June 10, 2025: In response to the tragic train accident in Maharashtra, the Indian Railways has announced significant changes to the design and manufacturing of non-air-conditioned (non-AC) trains. The move follows a meeting on Monday between Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, senior railway board officials, and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) team.
Earlier that morning, four individuals lost their lives and nine others sustained injuries after falling from two overcrowded local trains in Thane district. The incident occurred near Mumbra railway station during peak commuting hours, when the two trains were navigating a sharp curve simultaneously.
The overcrowding and lack of proper ventilation were identified as key factors contributing to the tragedy. In light of this, the Railway Ministry has decided to introduce three major design changes aimed at improving passenger safety and comfort on non-AC trains.
Firstly, the new train doors will feature louvres to enhance air circulation. Secondly, coaches will be equipped with roof-mounted ventilation units that will draw in fresh air, significantly improving the airflow within crowded compartments. Lastly, the inclusion of vestibules between coaches will allow passengers to move more freely, helping to distribute the crowd more evenly across the train.
These changes mark a major step towards ensuring safer and more comfortable travel for daily commuters, particularly in suburban and high-density routes.
The first prototype of the redesigned train is expected to be completed by November 2025. After undergoing necessary safety tests and certification, the new train will be introduced into service by January 2026.
Railway officials believe these upgrades will play a crucial role in reducing the risks associated with overcrowding and create a more humane commuting experience for millions of daily passengers.
