June 11, 2025: The Supreme Court of India has declined to entertain a petition challenging the construction of a new passenger jetty and terminal building at Radio Club in Colaba, Mumbai. The petition, filed by the Clean and Heritage Colaba Residents Association and others, raised concerns about the potential impact on the area’s heritage character and increased traffic congestion.
In its observation, the Supreme Court noted that the Bombay High Court had already listed the matter for hearing and urged it to expedite the proceedings. As a result, the project continues to move forward.
In a parallel development, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has granted environmental clearance for the proposed works, marking a significant milestone for the ₹229 crore initiative. Maharashtra Ports Development Minister Nitesh Rane reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing public infrastructure while maintaining transparency and adherence to due process.
Once completed, the new jetty is expected to alleviate congestion in the area by diverting existing boat services from the current location near the Gateway of India. The facility is designed to handle up to 20 boats simultaneously and includes a terminal building featuring an 80-square-metre amphitheatre with a seating capacity of 350. Additional infrastructure includes a dedicated approach jetty, fire safety systems, CCTV surveillance, and landscaped public spaces.
Although the project has faced resistance from local residents over environmental and heritage concerns, proponents argue that it will modernise maritime transport while reducing overcrowding. The state government maintains that the development is in the larger public interest.
The jetty project is slated for completion within 30 months, subject to ongoing legal proceedings that will balance developmental imperatives with the preservation of Colaba’s historical and civic character.
