June 11, 2025: Mumbai has secured the sixth position globally among 97 cities for under-construction data centre capacity, according to the 2025 edition of the Global Data Center Market Comparison report released by Cushman & Wakefield. With 335 megawatts (MW) of capacity currently being developed, the city leads the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region and is set to increase its operational capacity by 62%. This rapid expansion is being driven by growing demand from hyperscalers, the rise of cloud computing and AI-powered workloads, and Mumbai’s robust digital and power infrastructure.
The report highlights Mumbai’s emergence as a vital hub in the global digital infrastructure landscape. The city now contributes over 50% of India’s total data centre capacity, signalling a substantial step forward in supporting the country’s ambitions in the global data economy. Mumbai outpaces all other APAC cities, with only major US cities such as Virginia, Atlanta, and Dallas ranking higher globally.
Several key factors underpin this growth. Mumbai benefits from a strategic coastal location, 12 submarine cable landing stations—including the recently added MIST (Myanmar/Malaysia-India-Singapore Transit) cable—and a well-developed digital backbone. These make it an attractive destination for global cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Meta, all of whom are actively expanding their presence in India.
Despite this momentum, challenges such as limited land availability in key zones and variability in power access and costs persist. Nevertheless, Mumbai’s ascent strengthens India’s position in the digital economy and supports national initiatives such as ‘Digital India’ and ‘Make in India’. It also boosts foreign direct investment in data-driven sectors, improves latency and compliance through data localisation, and paves the way for secure, smart digital services for Indian users.
