July 4, 2025: Mumbai is poised for a significant infrastructure boost, with plans being drawn up for a 1.3-kilometre underground pedestrian tunnel linking the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) stations of Metro Line 3 and the forthcoming bullet train terminus, according to a report by The Times of India.
The initiative is designed to streamline passenger transfers and improve last-mile connectivity in one of Mumbai’s busiest commercial hubs. The tunnel is expected to be constructed 12 metres below the surface using the push box method and will pass beneath the Vakola Nallah.
A 7m x 7m knockout panel at the bullet train station will be removed to enable the connection — a method commonly employed in international infrastructure developments.
This pedestrian link is intended to ease movement for commuters, especially those carrying luggage, offering direct access from the Metro Line 3 station at the Income Tax Office (ITO) junction on Bandra-Kurla Link Road to the bullet train terminus, which currently lacks any direct connectivity.
Authorities hope that the new tunnel will help decongest roads, reduce reliance on autos and taxis, and ensure a safer, more reliable transit experience between both major transport systems.
While it remains uncertain whether travelators will be installed to aid the movement of passengers with baggage, officials are actively reviewing the feasibility.
A high-level meeting regarding the proposal was held on 1 July, during which planning and implementation aspects were discussed in detail.
If approved, the tunnel will mark another step forward in Mumbai’s transit integration efforts, reinforcing BKC’s status as a central mobility hub for the city and beyond.
