Colaba’s Pedestrian Revamp 40% Complete, Phase-I Set For December 2025 Launch

July 7, 2025: Colaba is on track to become significantly more pedestrian-friendly, with nearly 40% of the area’s new walking infrastructure already completed. Former BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar announced on Sunday that Phase I of the project—spanning from Mantralaya to Badhwar Park—is expected to be ready by December 2025.

With an estimated cost of ₹5 crore, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is leading this initiative to improve pedestrian movement along a 210-metre stretch between Deepak Jog Chowk and Bhai Bhandarkar Chowk. The project is being funded through the district planning and development committee in partnership with the tourism department.

As part of the transformation, the BMC is constructing stamped concrete footpaths, introducing vibrant 3D street art, and developing a multi-utility corridor for landscaping and public amenities. The beautification plan also includes planting Ashoka trees and ornamental plants, along with upgrading the boundary wall near Badhwar Park.

Officials said the location was strategically chosen for Phase I due to its proximity to Machimaar Nagar, one of Mumbai’s oldest fishing villages. Once this initial stretch is completed, the civic body intends to extend the pedestrian-friendly development up to Cuffe Parade.

“With wider footpaths, dedicated green corridors, improved lighting, and organised pedestrian zones, this project will greatly enhance the walking experience in the area for everyone,” said Narwekar.

The project reflects a growing focus on sustainable, walkable urban spaces and aims to balance heritage, tourism, and mobility needs in South Mumbai.
