October 31, 2025: Thane’s public transport network is poised for a major transformation as work on the 29-kilometre Thane Internal Ring Metro is set to commence in November 2025. The ambitious Rs 12,200 crore project will be executed by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro), marking a new milestone in the city’s urban mobility.
Approved by the Union Cabinet in August 2024, the circular metro corridor will connect the city’s western belt, creating seamless intra-city connectivity. The metro will feature 22 stations, including 20 elevated and two underground, stretching from the Ulhas River to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Key stations include Thane Junction, Wagle Estate, Manpada, Kolshet Industrial Area, New Thane, Raila Devi, Gandhi Nagar, Neelkanth Terminal, Lokmanya Nagar Bus Depot, and Patlipada. The entire line is expected to be operational by 2029.
Officials from Maha Metro stated that the corridor will ease congestion, cut travel time, and promote affordable, eco-friendly commuting for residents of Thane and adjoining areas within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. “The new metro line will help reduce road congestion and give residents a faster and more affordable way to commute,” an official said.
Initial projections estimate a daily ridership of 6.5 lakh passengers by 2029, which may rise to 8.7 lakh by 2045. The funding model will combine support from the Central and State governments, financial institutions, and revenue-generation measures like station naming rights and asset monetisation.
With pre-bid processes and tendering already underway, the Thane Internal Ring Metro is expected to emerge as one of the city’s most significant infrastructure projects — enhancing mobility, reducing pollution, and improving overall quality of life for residents.
