Dia Mirza Questions Infrastructure Priorities After Mumbai Metro Accident

Actor Dia Mirza has reacted strongly to the recent Mumbai Metro accident in Mulund West, raising concerns about the direction of urban development in the city. The incident occurred at an under-construction Metro site on LBS Marg, where a portion of a bridge parapet collapsed onto a passing autorickshaw, killing one person and critically injuring three others.

The tragedy has reignited debate over construction safety standards amid Mumbai’s rapid infrastructure expansion. Residents expressed shock over the incident, questioning whether adequate safeguards are being implemented at large-scale project sites.

Responding on X, formerly Twitter, Dia Mirza publicly questioned the prevailing approach to infrastructure growth. She asked, “What idea of infrastructure do you support?” She further added, “One that kills, suffocates, and destroys health and life? Or One that cares for and values life?”

Her remarks triggered mixed reactions online. One user commented, “Nothing like that, no suffocation ! Daily going in tremendous rush like kide makode caused more problems to self respect & self esteem.” Another wrote, “Obviously, One that cares for and values life.”

Meanwhile, Devendra Fadnavis expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured support for those injured. The Maharashtra government announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the deceased’s family and confirmed it would bear the medical expenses of the injured.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) issued a statement expressing regret and urging the public not to circulate misinformation. It confirmed that a high-level probe has been initiated and assured strict action against those found responsible. Financial penalties have been imposed, including a Rs 5 crore fine on the contractor and Rs 1 crore on the general consultants.

Investigations into the collapse remain ongoing.
