Mumbai’s growing metro grid is set to expand further, with plans underway for a new elevated corridor aimed at improving east-west links across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has proposed Metro-12A, an 18.4 km line that will run from Manpada in Kalyan to Khutari village in Taloja.
A detailed project report has been completed for the corridor. The alignment is expected to pass along Kalyan-Shilphata Road and National Highway 48 before connecting with Mumbai Metro Line 12 near Taloja.
“A detailed project report is prepared from Manpada to Khutari Village in Taloja for Metro-12A. A spur line (a short branching out of the main route) could connect the corridor to the Thane Bullet Train station as well,” said an official from MMRDA.
The proposed route is likely to include 10 to 12 elevated stations and is intended to serve the eastern belt of the MMR, where most commuters currently depend on suburban railway services. Authorities indicated that the new stretch may share infrastructure with Mumbai Metro Line 14, which is planned between Katai Naka and Kalyan Phata.
“This extension of Metro 12 will help the public take alternate routes as it has been proposed to have an intersection with Metro Line 14 and Metro Line 5,” said a transport expert.
The estimated cost will cover civil construction, power supply systems, signalling, telecommunications and rolling stock procurement. As the alignment is fully elevated, significant land acquisition is not expected.
Earlier this week, MMRDA presented a Rs 48,000 crore budget for 2026-27, allocating a major share toward metro and infrastructure projects. While work on Line 12 is at an advanced stage, construction on Line 14, set to become the longest metro corridor in the region at 45 km, has recently begun.
