Mumbai Metro Line 2B Advances With Successful U-Girder Installation At Halav Bridge

Construction of Mumbai Metro Line 2B has moved ahead with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority successfully installing two U-girders at Halav Bridge in Kurla, according to an official statement. The authority confirmed that the girders were launched at 4 am on February 21, 2026, marking a key milestone in the development of the East-West metro corridor.

The upcoming line will link prominent residential and commercial hubs such as D.N. Nagar, BKC, Kurla, Chembur and Mandale. Once operational, the corridor is expected to serve lakhs of commuters daily, significantly cutting travel time and reducing congestion on major road networks.

The Halav Bridge stretch posed notable engineering challenges as it falls within the airport funnel zone, where vertical clearance between the Metro viaduct and the existing bridge is limited to just 3.5 metres. Despite the restriction, the task was executed smoothly after securing all necessary approvals. Detailed planning and precise technical coordination ensured safe completion of the operation.

To limit public inconvenience in the busy Kurla area, the girder installation was carried out overnight. While light vehicles such as auto-rickshaws, taxis, tempos and ambulances continue to ply on Halav Bridge, heavy vehicles have been systematically diverted.

At the nearby S. G. Barve Marg Metro Station, foundation and pier work has been completed in compliance with aviation height norms. The two 20-metre U-girders were lifted using 500 MT cranes under expert supervision.

With this phase complete, the project will proceed to track laying, overhead catenary installation and power and telecom infrastructure development, bringing Mumbai closer to a more efficient and integrated urban transit system.
