Resident doctors at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) have strongly objected to a proposal to rename the historic institution, describing the move as “deeply disappointing and unacceptable.” The opposition comes after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiated plans to change the hospital’s name as part of a broader policy shift.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the KEM Medical Resident Doctors’ Association (MARD) stressed that the hospital’s identity goes far beyond its name, highlighting its long-standing contribution to public healthcare, medical education, and patient services. “KEM has, for decades, stood as a symbol of excellence in public healthcare, medical education, and patient service. Its identity carries deep meaning for generations of doctors, students, alumni, staff, and patients,” the statement read.
The association emphasised that any such decision should involve consultation with key stakeholders, particularly resident doctors who play a crucial role in the hospital’s functioning. It further argued that renaming the institution would not address the pressing operational challenges faced on the ground.
Pointing to issues such as inadequate hostel facilities, frequent lift breakdowns, and delays in stipend payments, the association said, “At a time when these issues persist, the focus must remain on strengthening healthcare systems and improving working conditions rather than symbolic changes,” it said.
Reiterating the hospital’s legacy and reputation, the doctors maintained that its name reflects decades of trust and service that should be preserved. They suggested that if authorities wish to create a new institutional identity, resources should instead be directed toward building a modern healthcare facility with improved infrastructure.
The civic health committee has proposed renaming the hospital as “Kaushalyashreshtha Ekalavya Memorial (KEM) Hospital.” The proposal will now move through administrative approvals before a final decision is taken.
