Striking drone footage has offered a rare aerial glimpse of the much-anticipated “Missing Link” project on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, which is scheduled to open to traffic on May 1, 2026. The visuals highlight the scale and complexity of the new stretch, underscoring its significance as one of the region’s most transformative infrastructure upgrades.
After years of planning and construction, the new section is expected to substantially cut travel time between Mumbai and Pune, offering a faster and more efficient alternative to the existing ghat route. Designed to ease congestion and improve traffic flow, the corridor is being positioned as a critical upgrade to one of India’s busiest highways.
Authorities have indicated that the initial rollout will prioritise safety. The stretch will operate with speed restrictions, and heavy vehicles, including trucks and those carrying hazardous materials, will not be permitted in the early phase. The implementation framework has been developed under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, with close coordination between the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation and highway police authorities.
Engineering-wise, the project stands out for its ambitious design elements. It includes twin tunnels measuring approximately 1.75 km and 8.9 km, constructed beneath the Lonavala Lake region. In addition, a 650-metre cable-stayed bridge spans Tiger Valley, supported by pylons that rise up to 182 metres—making it one of the most visually striking features of the project.
The Missing Link is expected to deliver multiple long-term benefits beyond faster travel. By bypassing the older and more winding ghat section, it is likely to reduce fuel consumption, lower vehicular emissions, and improve overall driving safety. The shift in traffic is also expected to ease pressure on the existing route, which has long struggled with congestion, especially during peak travel periods.
As the opening date approaches, the project is being seen as a major milestone in regional connectivity. The newly released drone visuals not only capture its architectural scale but also reinforce its role in reshaping travel between two of Maharashtra’s most important urban centres.
