KDMC Clears Bottleneck In Kalyan SATIS Project, Flyover Opening Targeted This June

A key hurdle in the long-delayed Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS) project near Kalyan railway station has been cleared after the demolition of a decades-old structure that had stalled construction activities for several years.

The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation said the removal of the “Optics Building” has resolved four major bottlenecks affecting progress on the flyover project, allowing work on the pending section to resume immediately. Officials indicated that the first phase of the flyover is now expected to open by June 30.

The building had remained a major obstacle due to prolonged legal disputes and coordination issues involving civic authorities and stakeholders. Following court proceedings and administrative intervention, the structure was finally demolished, enabling construction activity to move forward.

The SATIS project, designed to reduce traffic congestion around Kalyan railway station, has been under development for nearly eight years. Once completed, the 1,200-metre-long flyover will connect Bail Bazaar Chowk on Vallipeer Road with Subhash Chowk on Murbad Road, helping vehicles bypass heavily congested internal roads surrounding the station precinct.

Civic officials stated that construction work on the affected stretch commenced immediately after the demolition. Executive Engineer Rohini Lokre said the remaining work is being executed on priority to ensure completion of the first operational phase within the targeted timeline.

The project is also incorporating Malaysian Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) technology at crucial sections of the structure. Authorities said the use of the advanced construction technology is expected to accelerate execution while improving the durability and structural performance of the flyover.

Once operational, the SATIS flyover is expected to significantly improve traffic movement outside Kalyan station, one of the busiest suburban transit hubs in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where congestion has remained a longstanding civic concern.
