Minister Shambhuraj Desai Directs Fast-Track Redevelopment Of 388 MHADA Buildings In Mumbai

The Maharashtra government has directed the Urban Development Department to speed up the redevelopment process for 388 MHADA buildings in Mumbai, acting Housing Minister Shambhuraj Desai said on Wednesday. The redevelopment issue was reviewed during a meeting attended by legislators, government officials and residents affected by the projects.

The meeting was held at the Meghdoot government residence during the ongoing state legislature session and focused on addressing challenges and delays linked to the redevelopment of old MHADA buildings across Mumbai city. Senior officials from the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board also participated in the discussions.

Among those present at the meeting were MLAs Manoj Jamsutkar, Rais Shaikh and Manisha Chaudhari, along with Milind Shambharkar, Chief Executive Officer of the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board. Residents from several affected housing colonies also attended and raised concerns regarding pending redevelopment works and procedural delays.

Speaking during the meeting, Desai said the state government is positive about moving the redevelopment process forward and has instructed the Urban Development Department to take necessary steps to accelerate approvals and implementation.

The redevelopment of ageing MHADA buildings has become a major urban issue in Mumbai, where many old residential structures require structural upgrades, rehabilitation and improved infrastructure. Several projects have faced delays over approvals, planning permissions, consent requirements and coordination between agencies.

During the discussion, legislators appreciated Desai’s approach towards handling redevelopment-related matters. They stated that he was among the few ministers who convened immediate review meetings and ensured quicker decision-making on issues raised by elected representatives and residents.

The MLAs also acknowledged his coordinated working style and efforts to address long-pending concerns related to redevelopment projects in Mumbai. Officials indicated that further discussions and follow-up reviews are expected as the government moves ahead with the redevelopment process for the 388 MHADA buildings.
