The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started the process of preparing a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Metro Line 14 connecting Kanjurmarg to Badlapur, advancing the long-delayed infrastructure project towards implementation.
To take the project forward, MMRDA has issued a tender for appointing a consultant who will prepare the updated DPR and finalise the overall implementation strategy for the metro corridor. Officials said the revised report will outline the technical design, financial structure and execution framework required before construction activities can begin.
According to reports, three consultancy firms have submitted bids for the assignment. After evaluating the proposals and appointing a consultant, the authority is expected to move ahead with the approval process and later invite construction tenders for the project.
Metro Line 14 has been planned as a key suburban transit corridor aimed at strengthening direct connectivity between Mumbai and Badlapur via Thane district. The proposed route is expected to span nearly 39 to 45 kilometres and include around 15 stations across the alignment.
The corridor will comprise both elevated and underground sections, with certain stretches planned through the Parsik Hill region and areas near Thane Creek. The metro line is expected to improve daily commuting for residents in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs as well as rapidly developing parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Officials believe the corridor will help reduce travel time between Kanjurmarg and Badlapur while also easing pressure on existing suburban railway and road transport networks. The estimated cost of the project is expected to be around INR 18,000 crore.
MMRDA officials stated that after approval of the revised DPR, the authority will proceed with the next stages of project tendering and execution planning. However, construction work and full completion of the metro corridor are expected to take several years.
