Maharashtra Advances Worli Jetty Redevelopment Plan With Water Transport Hub & Helipad Proposal

The Maharashtra government is moving ahead with plans to redevelop the temporary jetty near Worli Dairy into a permanent maritime transport and emergency response facility, as authorities look to repurpose infrastructure created for the Mumbai Coastal Road project.

Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane said the process of appointing a Project Management Consultant (PMC) is currently in its final stage. The selected consultant will oversee technical feasibility studies, environmental clearances and preparation of detailed project reports for the proposed redevelopment.

The state government has also sought expressions of interest from private firms for the development of a helipad at the site through the public-private partnership (PPP) model. Officials said the proposed facility is expected to support emergency operations and improve connectivity through multimodal transport infrastructure.

The proposal was discussed during a review meeting held at Mantralaya, attended by senior government officials, including Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide and Maharashtra Maritime Board Chief Executive Officer Pradeep P.

According to officials, temporary jetties had earlier been constructed near the Amarsons Garden Interchange and the Worli Dairy stretch for transporting construction materials required for the Mumbai Coastal Road project. With work on the coastal road nearing completion, the government is now assessing long-term uses for the existing infrastructure.

Authorities said the redevelopment plan is aimed at strengthening urban mobility, supporting water transport services and creating infrastructure that can also be utilised during emergency situations. The project forms part of broader efforts to expand Mumbai’s coastal and maritime transport network while improving connectivity options within the city.

Officials added that the proposed hub could play a role in integrating future water transport systems with other public infrastructure projects across Mumbai. Further decisions regarding project timelines, investment structure and operational planning are expected after completion of technical assessments and environmental approvals.
