The redevelopment of the historic Swadeshi Market in Mumbai’s Kalbadevi area will move forward with support from the Maharashtra government, with assurances that traders and members will not face hardship during the process, according to Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan.
Speaking at an event organised to celebrate the 117th foundation day of the market, Chavan said the long-pending redevelopment project has received backing from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and will aim to modernise the market while retaining its historical and cultural significance.
During his address, Chavan referred to the contribution of freedom fighter Babu Genu Said, who is associated with the Swadeshi movement and protests against foreign cloth during India’s independence struggle. He said the Swadeshi Market has continued to preserve the ideals and legacy of the movement for more than a century.
As part of the celebrations, a commemorative postal envelope marking the institution’s 117-year journey was also unveiled during the event.
Chavan further stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promoted initiatives such as “Make in India, Make for the World” over the past 12 years, with a focus on strengthening Indian manufacturing and expanding global market access for domestic products.
Maharashtra minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha said the country has witnessed major development initiatives under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and added that Maharashtra is also progressing rapidly under Chief Minister Fadnavis. He said the redevelopment of Swadeshi Market is expected to become an important part of the area’s future development.
The programme was attended by Swadeshi Market president Sumit Mehra, Navi Mumbai Postmaster General Suchita Joshi and BJP corporators Akash Rajpurohit and Rita Makwana, among others.
