Mumbai’s 10.88-Km SCLR Corridor Nears Completion As Final Construction Phase Reaches 98% Progress

Mumbai is moving closer to the full operationalisation of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) corridor, with the final phase of the project reaching 98 per cent physical completion, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

On May 27, MMRDA officials conducted a site inspection of the BKC-Vakola connector and directed contractors and project agencies to speed up the remaining work while ensuring construction quality and safety standards are maintained.

The inspection was carried out by Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee along with Additional Metropolitan Commissioner-1 Vikram Kumar, who reviewed the progress of the ongoing works and assessed the final stages of execution across the corridor.

The SCLR project is one of Mumbai’s major east-west connectivity infrastructure projects and includes multiple elevated stretches, connecting arms and key interchanges linking several transport corridors across the city.

Once fully operational, the 10.88-km corridor is expected to function as a continuous high-speed east-west mobility route connecting major parts of Mumbai and improving travel between the eastern and western suburbs.

Officials said the project is expected to reduce travel time by nearly 35 minutes and help ease congestion on several key arterial roads across the city.

Phase 2 represents the final stage of the broader Santacruz-Chembur Link Road project, which has been developed in phases over the years to strengthen east-west urban connectivity and improve traffic movement in Mumbai’s central transport network.

According to officials, completion of the final phase will transform the SCLR from a partially connected route into a fully integrated urban mobility corridor.

The BKC-Vakola connector is considered a critical component of the larger network as it links the Bandra-Kurla Complex business district with the Santacruz-Chembur corridor and surrounding transport infrastructure.

MMRDA officials stated that the near-completion of the project marks a significant milestone in Mumbai’s ongoing infrastructure expansion programme aimed at improving urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion and strengthening connectivity between residential, commercial and transit hubs across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
