Mumbai’s premier business district, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is set to become the testing ground for India’s first large-scale pod taxi network, as authorities look for new solutions to one of the city’s most persistent commuting challenges—last-mile connectivity.
Every weekday, lakhs of commuters arrive at Bandra and Kurla railway stations before making the final leg of their journey to offices across BKC. Despite extensive public transport networks, this short distance often involves long queues for shared autorickshaws, traffic congestion and extended travel times, particularly during peak hours.
To address this issue, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning a Personalised Rapid Transit (PRT) system, commonly known as pod taxis. The proposed network will feature small automated pods operating on elevated guideways, offering point-to-point travel within the business district.
The project aims to provide air-conditioned rides, shorter waiting times and uninterrupted travel above road traffic. Authorities believe the system could significantly improve commuter movement within BKC, which attracts an estimated four to six lakh visitors daily.
The pod taxi initiative is expected to be operational by 2028, subject to project timelines and approvals. If implemented as planned, it would mark one of the first large-scale deployments of the technology in India.
However, transport experts remain divided on its potential impact. While many acknowledge that BKC faces serious last-mile connectivity issues, some have questioned whether the proposed system will have the capacity to serve the large number of daily commuters entering the business district.
Supporters argue that the project represents an innovative mobility solution that could complement existing transport infrastructure. Critics, meanwhile, contend that broader investments in buses, pedestrian facilities and feeder services may benefit a larger share of commuters.
As Mumbai continues expanding its metro and transit network, the pod taxi project represents another experiment in addressing urban mobility challenges in one of the country’s busiest commercial centres.
