Western Railway has initiated fencing, concreting and site protection measures at Garib Nagar in Bandra East after completing a large-scale encroachment removal operation that cleared more than 500 unauthorised structures from railway-owned land earmarked for the expansion of Bandra Terminus.
The clearance exercise, carried out in the settlement adjoining the railway corridor, enabled authorities to recover around 5,200 square metres of land. The reclaimed parcel is expected to play a key role in the planned expansion and infrastructure augmentation of Bandra Terminus.
Following the demolition drive, railway officials moved swiftly to secure the recovered land by installing fencing and constructing concrete barriers to prevent fresh encroachments. Debris generated during the operation is also being cleared to prepare the site for future railway-related development activities.
The reclaimed land forms part of Western Railway’s broader strategy to increase passenger-handling capacity and strengthen operational infrastructure at Bandra Terminus, which serves as one of Mumbai’s major hubs for long-distance train services. The proposed expansion is aimed at accommodating future growth in rail traffic while addressing existing space limitations within the station premises.
According to officials, safeguarding the land immediately after its recovery was essential to ensure that it remains available for upcoming infrastructure works. Similar protection measures have been adopted in previous railway land reclamation projects across Mumbai.
The demolition operation was among the largest anti-encroachment drives undertaken in the area in recent years. The exercise involved coordinated efforts by railway authorities, law enforcement agencies and local administrative officials to ensure smooth execution.
Bandra Terminus has witnessed steady growth in passenger traffic and remains an important gateway connecting Mumbai to multiple destinations across the country. To support future operational requirements, railway authorities have been exploring various capacity enhancement initiatives.
Urban infrastructure experts note that land scarcity remains one of the biggest hurdles for transport expansion projects in Mumbai. Reclaiming and securing railway land is often considered a crucial first step toward implementing station upgrades and other infrastructure improvements.
With protection works now underway, Western Railway has entered the next phase of preparing the site for the proposed Bandra Terminus expansion and related railway infrastructure development.
