In a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at easing commuter pressure, a new foot overbridge (FOB) has been opened at Mulund railway station on Mumbai’s Central Railway line. The facility, constructed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), is expected to significantly improve passenger movement, reduce congestion on existing bridges and enhance overall safety at one of the suburban network’s busiest stations.
The newly commissioned southern FOB is 8 metres wide and 43 metres long, designed specifically to manage the heavy footfall seen during peak morning and evening hours. Railway officials said the bridge will help streamline passenger dispersal across platforms and reduce the load on existing foot overbridges, which often witness severe overcrowding.
Mulund station is among the most crowded points on the Central Railway suburban corridor, with thousands of commuters passing through daily. Officials noted that the addition of the new structure will help balance passenger flow more efficiently, particularly during rush-hour periods when platform-to-platform movement becomes congested and slow.
The FOB has been equipped with improved lighting, safety railings and anti-skid flooring to enhance commuter safety. It also includes accessibility features such as provisions for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, making station movement more inclusive and convenient.
According to railway authorities, the project is part of MRVC’s broader programme to modernise Mumbai’s suburban railway infrastructure. Along with constructing foot overbridges, the corporation is actively working on station redevelopment, installation of escalators and lifts, and expansion of rail infrastructure to improve the daily commuting experience.
Passengers at Mulund station have welcomed the new addition, stating that it will ease platform transfers and reduce waiting time on overcrowded bridges. Many commuters highlighted that the wider bridge offers a safer and faster alternative, especially during peak hours when existing FOBs often become heavily congested.
The development is expected to bring immediate relief to regular commuters while contributing to longer-term improvements in station capacity and passenger safety on the Central Railway network.
