The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has fixed completion timelines for three major road infrastructure projects aimed at improving east-west connectivity and reducing congestion across Mumbai. The Vidyavihar east-west connector is expected to open by August 31, the first phase of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) by September, and the Mankhurd-Maharashtra Nagar flyover by May 31, 2027.
The ₹76.18-crore Vidyavihar east-west flyover, which has been under planning for more than three decades, is now in its final stage of construction. The 650-metre, two-lane bridge will connect LBS Marg with Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg and features the city’s longest 100-metre railway-span girder. Once operational, it is expected to reduce travel time between Vidyavihar East and West from over 30 minutes to around 10-15 minutes. The project also includes upgraded pedestrian access at Vidyavihar railway station through improved station facilities, new access links and a staircase connecting the foot overbridge to the subway. Around 80% of the work has been completed.
The 1.2-km Dindoshi-Film City flyover, which missed its earlier May deadline, is now scheduled to open in September. Built at an estimated cost of ₹300 crore, the elevated corridor will connect Dindoshi on the Western Express Highway with Film City near Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The flyover forms the first operational phase of the ₹14,000-crore GMLR project and is expected to ease congestion on the Western Express Highway. Once the GMLR’s twin tunnels are completed by 2027, the corridor will provide direct connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs.
According to civic officials, civil construction has been completed, while finishing works such as road surfacing, painting, installation of traffic signals and signage are currently underway.
The BMC has also set May 31, 2027, as the completion deadline for the Mankhurd-Maharashtra Nagar flyover project. Designed to decongest the busy Mankhurd T-junction, the project includes two dedicated two-lane flyover arms that will improve connectivity between the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road and Vashi. Construction began in October 2024, and nearly 33% of the work has been completed.
During a review visit, Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar directed officials to prepare a comprehensive traffic management plan for the Vidyavihar connector in coordination with the traffic police and civic departments. He also instructed authorities to remove bottlenecks, expedite utility shifting works and deploy additional manpower to ensure timely completion of the Mankhurd flyover while maintaining construction safety standards.
