A section of an old roof structure collapsed at Panvel railway station on Thursday evening during ongoing platform extension work, with railway authorities confirming that no injuries were reported and train services remained unaffected.
Officials described the incident as minor, stating that an old roof sheet and a supporting pillar connected to the overhead equipment (OHE) came down while infrastructure work was in progress. Videos shared by commuters showed the collapsed structure within the construction area.
The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), which is executing the platform extension project, said the incident occurred during the planned dismantling of a portion of the station’s old roof.
According to MRVC, the collapse involved an old roof sheet and a supporting OHE mast that fell during the dismantling process. The agency clarified that the occurrence was confined to the designated work zone and did not pose any risk to passengers or disrupt railway operations.
Officials reiterated that no one was injured in the incident and confirmed that train services at Panvel station continued as scheduled without any delays or cancellations.
The platform extension work forms part of the Panvel-Karjat New Suburban Corridor Project, which includes the removal of old station structures to facilitate infrastructure upgrades. Authorities said the project is being carried out in a controlled environment in accordance with approved engineering procedures and prescribed safety protocols.
“During the systematic removal of an old roof structure, a portion of the dismantled sheet came in contact with a non-operational (dead) OHE mast within the designated work area. The occurrence was confined entirely to the construction zone during the course of the planned dismantling activity,” said an official.
Railway authorities added that necessary safety measures have been implemented at the site to ensure work progresses without compromising passenger safety. The platform expansion project will continue as planned while officials monitor construction activities and maintain adherence to engineering and safety standards.
