The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a ₹31.20-crore tender for the beautification of Regal Junction in Colaba as part of its larger pedestrianisation plan covering Kala Ghoda, the Gateway of India area and Regal Junction. The project aims to improve pedestrian infrastructure and boost tourism.
The BMC’s Highways Department issued the tender on July 22, with interested bidders invited to submit their proposals by August 17.
The redevelopment plan includes laying granite and basalt cobblestones, redesigning and realigning traffic islands and medians, installing heritage-style lampposts and cantilevered traffic signals, carrying out illumination works, and realigning Regal Junction.
The project also includes the relocation of the Vikrant Memorial, relocation of existing trees wherever required, and the plantation of new trees and shrubs. In addition, the number of traffic signals at the junction will be reduced from 27 to nine.
According to reports, a public plaza will be developed opposite the Director General of Police’s office near Regal Junction. The plaza will house Mumbai’s first outdoor art museum, while traffic moving from Regal Junction towards the Gateway of India will become one-way.
Reports also quoted Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar as saying that the project has received all the required statutory approvals. An underground parking facility is also being planned at Regal Junction. The proposed changes are expected to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and ensure smoother entry and exit from the precinct.
