In a move to strengthen transparency and accountability in public infrastructure projects, the Maharashtra government has decided to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) and geo-tagging technology to monitor and audit development works carried out by urban and rural local bodies across the state.
Under the new system, projects executed by municipal corporations, municipal councils, nagar panchayats and other local self-government institutions will be digitally tracked using geo-tagged photographs and AI-based verification. The technology will enable authorities to monitor the progress and completion of projects while ensuring that works are executed as approved.
The initiative is designed to improve the implementation of government development projects by enhancing transparency, accountability and operational efficiency. It is also expected to curb irregularities, prevent duplication of works and reduce the misuse of public funds.
Officials said the AI-powered monitoring system will facilitate real-time tracking of development works, enable remote verification of projects and help identify discrepancies at an early stage, allowing timely corrective action.
The AI-enabled audit system will also create a comprehensive digital record of civic infrastructure projects, making inspections more effective and supporting better utilisation of public resources. Through this technology-driven initiative, the Maharashtra government aims to modernise project monitoring, strengthen governance and improve public confidence in the execution of development works.
