Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane reviewed the expansion plans of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the progress of the upcoming Vadhavan Port project during his visit to Uran. The review meeting focused on enhancing maritime infrastructure, improving logistics connectivity and strengthening Maharashtra’s position in global trade.
During the visit, Rane held discussions with JNPA Chairman Gaurav Dayal, Maharashtra Maritime Board Chief Executive Officer P. Pradeep, JNPA Secretary and General Manager Manisha Jadhav, along with senior officials from JNPA and the Maharashtra Maritime Board.
The minister examined JNPA’s current cargo-handling capacity, multimodal connectivity network, infrastructure upgrades and future plans to increase container-handling capabilities. Officials also presented details of initiatives being implemented to promote sustainable and environmentally responsible port operations.
The meeting also highlighted skill development initiatives undertaken by JNPA in association with international organisations. These programmes aim to enhance workforce capabilities and provide specialised training to personnel working in the maritime sector.
Rane also reviewed the development roadmap of the Vadhavan Port project in Palghar district, which is being developed through collaboration between the Central and Maharashtra governments. The project is expected to play a significant role in expanding the state’s port capacity and improving maritime trade infrastructure.
The discussions covered several aspects, including the creation of world-class port facilities, strengthening multimodal logistics networks, increasing operational efficiency and positioning Maharashtra as a leading maritime trade hub.
Emphasising the importance of effective implementation, Rane stressed the need for stronger coordination between the state and central governments to ensure timely execution of major port development projects.
He also highlighted the role of advanced technology, workforce development and modern infrastructure in accelerating growth in Maharashtra’s maritime sector. The minister said that adopting global standards and improving connectivity would be crucial for making the state’s ports more competitive.
The review comes amid Maharashtra’s broader efforts to expand its coastal and logistics infrastructure through projects such as Vadhavan Port and upgrades at existing maritime facilities. These initiatives are expected to boost cargo movement, support industrial growth and strengthen the state’s role in India’s maritime economy.
