A crane deployed for construction work under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) collapsed onto a railway overhead equipment (OHE) wire between Kurla and Trombay in Mumbai.
The incident damaged the railway’s overhead power infrastructure, but no major casualties were reported. The affected stretch is primarily used for freight movement, and railway officials said suburban passenger services were not disrupted.
The crane reportedly fell from a nearby MMRDA construction site and came into contact with the railway’s overhead electrical system. The incident raised concerns over safety around railway infrastructure amid ongoing construction activity in the city.
Railway authorities responded to the incident and assessed the damage to the OHE system. Since the affected route does not form part of Mumbai’s regular suburban passenger network, local train operations continued normally.
The Kurla-Trombay section is an important route for freight movement, connecting parts of Mumbai’s rail network with industrial and port-linked areas. The incident, however, did not result in any reported major disruption to passenger traffic.
Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances that led to the crane collapse and assess whether additional safety measures are required at construction sites located close to railway infrastructure.
