BMC Clears Proposal To Set Up Coastal Committee For Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has cleared a proposal to establish an independent coastal committee to oversee the conservation, protection, management and sustainable development of Mumbai’s coastline.

The proposal was approved during the civic body’s general body meeting on Friday after receiving support from corporators across political parties. The House has now sought a report from the municipal commissioner on the feasibility and desirability of implementing the recommendations outlined in the proposal.

BJP corporator Yogita Koli had submitted the proposal on June 25, calling for the creation of a dedicated committee under the BMC to address the growing environmental and developmental challenges affecting Mumbai’s coastal areas.

Focus on Coastal Conservation

In her proposal, Koli highlighted several concerns, including sewage discharge into coastal waters, the dumping of plastic and other solid waste, unauthorised encroachments and the deterioration of marine biodiversity.

The proposal also drew attention to the challenges faced by Koliwadas, with Koli stating that issues affecting these traditional fishing settlements were having an impact on Mumbai’s wider coastal ecosystem.

The proposed committee would be tasked with addressing marine pollution, maintaining and beautifying beaches, protecting marine biodiversity and overseeing development planning along coastal areas.

It would also focus on improving and redeveloping basic infrastructure in Koliwadas, promoting marine tourism and ensuring coordination between various policies and projects concerning Mumbai’s coastal belt.

Proposed Committee Structure

According to the proposal, the committee should include representatives from the Koli community, corporators from coastal constituencies, marine and environmental experts, representatives of relevant business sectors and officials from the BMC and other concerned administrative departments.

The proposed body is intended to create a coordinated framework for planning, monitoring and implementing measures related to Mumbai’s coastline.

The proposal noted that such a mechanism could help address environmental concerns while balancing development requirements. It aims to strengthen oversight of Mumbai’s approximately 150-km coastline and promote measures that protect coastal ecosystems while supporting sustainable development.
