Citizens Raise Concerns Over Commercialisation Of Bandra Reclamation Promenade

A proposed beautification project at the Bandra Reclamation Promenade has triggered concerns among citizens, who allege that the Rs 5-crore work could transform the open waterfront space into a permanent performance and commercial venue.

The Bandra Reclamation Area Volunteers Organisation (BRAVO) has raised objections over the proposed construction of a permanent steel structure measuring around 15-20 metres in width. The citizens’ group claims the structure could effectively turn the promenade into a covered amphitheatre or concert space, changing the character of an open public area used by residents and visitors.

In a letter addressed to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, BRAVO chairperson Vidya Vaidya urged the authorities to withdraw the no-objection certificate (NOC) issued for the project and cancel the proposed beautification work near the “I Love Mumbai” installation.

Concerns Over Coastal Regulations

According to the citizens’ group, the proposed permanent structure could conflict with Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) regulations governing construction along the waterfront. The group has also alleged that the structure may extend beyond the existing retaining wall and into the bay area, potentially raising concerns about encroachment into Mahim Creek and compliance with environmental regulations.

BRAVO has further questioned provisions for permanent storage spaces for equipment linked to the proposed facility. The group believes this could indicate that the project is intended for regular commercial use rather than being limited to beautification.

Vaidya said the structure would obstruct the promenade’s open skyline views and alter the nature of the public space. “Has the Slum Authority started a business of beautifying promenades instead of rehabilitation of slums,” the letter questioned.

MSRDC Says Promenade Will Reopen

The citizens’ group has warned that approval of the project could create a precedent for commercial use of other promenades in Bandra. It has called for the project to be cancelled and urged authorities to follow established planning processes involving experts and citizens.

Meanwhile, a senior MSRDC official said the current work involves a covered shed as part of “additional beautification” along the pathway.

“The previous facilities on the promenade will remain,” he said. “The Slum Board under MHADA has proposed some beautification works, and after they are completed, the promenade will be opened to the public.”
