Construction of Amazon’s proposed data centre in Balkum, Thane, has faced opposition, with Thane MP Naresh Mhaske seeking a halt to the work over concerns raised by local residents around water use, the environment and the project’s impact on the surrounding area.
The proposed hyperscale facility is spread across around 53 acres and is expected to require 422 MW of power, with 193 diesel generator sets planned as backup.
Mhaske has sought an independent review of the project’s approvals and called for an expert committee to examine the concerns. He has also sought a public hearing involving residents and other stakeholders before construction proceeds further.
Residents have raised concerns over water consumption, tree felling, noise and traffic, as well as the project’s proximity to residential buildings, schools and hospitals.
The Thane Municipal Corporation has said the data centre will receive treated water from sewage treatment plants at Kolshet and Majiwada. Amazon, meanwhile, has said the facility will use closed-loop cooling technology and will not use water for cooling.
