Construction of the Dahisar-Bhayandar Link Road (DBLR) is progressing, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) setting December 2028 as the target for completing the key connectivity project linking Mumbai with the Mira-Bhayandar region.
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar recently inspected the project site at the Bhayandar Interchange within the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation area and reviewed construction progress, upcoming works and safety arrangements.
The DBLR forms part of the Mumbai Coastal Road (North), a larger BMC infrastructure programme covering around 60 km, including interchanges and connecting roads, and planned to link Vesave with Bhayandar. The wider project has been divided into seven packages — A, B, C, D, E, F and DBLR.
5.135-Km Corridor Under Construction
The DBLR extends for approximately 5.135 km, creating a direct connection between Dahisar West and Bhayandar West.
The project involves several complex structures, including an elevated road, stilt-supported sections through mangrove areas, an elevated crossing over the creek, structures across salt-pan land, connecting roads, flyovers and interchanges.
The main elevated section is planned to be around 3.83 km long and 45 metres wide, forming an important component of the northern coastal corridor.
Foundation Work Advances
During the inspection, officials briefed Bangar on foundation and preliminary construction activities. Gabion wall fencing is being undertaken, while pile and pile-cap construction is progressing for the elevated section.
According to the BMC, 60 piles, five pile caps, four piers, pier caps and nine bridge segments have been completed so far.
Modern construction machinery is being used at the site, while a temporary access bridge has been established to support ongoing operations.
The next significant milestone is the launch of the launching girder, with work scheduled to commence in the second week of October. Bangar reviewed preparations for the operation during his visit.
Focus on Land Acquisition and Safety
Bangar directed officials to accelerate the acquisition of land required for the project and establish priorities for the remaining parcels. He also called for closer coordination with the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation and other agencies involved in the project.
Contractors and project teams were instructed to strictly follow prescribed safety standard operating procedures, maintain appropriate barricading and ensure construction quality throughout the execution period.
Bangar also emphasised that the project should remain aligned with the December 2028 completion target.
The inspection was attended by Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Infrastructure) Girish Nikam, Deputy Chief Engineer (Mumbai Coastal Road-North) Vaibhav Gandhi, along with engineers, consultants and other officials associated with the project.
Part of Mumbai’s Expanding Coastal Network
Once completed, the DBLR is expected to provide a more direct road connection between Mumbai’s western suburbs and the Mira-Bhayandar region, while forming part of the larger northern extension of Mumbai’s Coastal Road network.
The corridor is being developed alongside other major infrastructure projects intended to improve east-west and north-south movement across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Its completion will also depend on coordinated progress in land acquisition, structural construction and the execution of associated interchanges and link roads.
With foundation work underway and girder launching scheduled for October, the BMC is now targeting December 2028 for the DBLR to be completed and brought closer to operational use.
