The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is developing a new flyover in Worli to create a more direct connection between Dr E Moses Road and Dr Annie Besant Road, with the Rs 285-crore project targeted for completion by February 2027.
The proposed structure will span approximately 571 metres and measure 18.3 metres in width. It is being constructed near the Nehru Science Centre and will pass over a major drain adjoining the institution.
Direct Route to Ease Worli Traffic
The new flyover is intended to provide motorists with an alternative to the existing route through the congested Worli Naka junction. By creating a direct link between the two roads, the project is expected to streamline traffic travelling between Worli, Lower Parel and adjoining parts of central Mumbai.
The improved connection could also benefit vehicles travelling towards the Coastal Road and Pedder Road, reducing the need to take longer routes through busy junctions.
The project is part of the BMC’s broader programme of road and bridge construction aimed at improving mobility across heavily used corridors in central and south Mumbai.
Pedestrian Underpass Included
Alongside the flyover, the project includes a pedestrian underpass connecting the Nehru Science Centre and Nehru Planetarium. The facility is planned to offer visitors a dedicated route between the two institutions without requiring them to cross the main vehicular corridor.
The project also incorporates pedestrian infrastructure around the flyover, reflecting the need to accommodate both motorists and visitors in the area.
The Nehru Science Centre and Nehru Planetarium attract significant visitor movement, making a separate pedestrian connection particularly relevant for safety and accessibility.
Strengthening the Wider Worli Road Network
Worli is an important convergence point for traffic originating from Lower Parel’s commercial areas, residential neighbourhoods and routes towards the western suburbs. Existing road links can experience pressure as vehicles move through Worli Naka towards different parts of Mumbai.
The proposed flyover is designed to distribute some of this traffic onto an additional route, potentially reducing dependence on the junction and improving connectivity within the surrounding network.
Rather than functioning as an isolated bridge project, the structure is planned as part of a larger road system linking existing and emerging transport corridors.
February 2027 Completion Target
The BMC has set February 2027 as the current completion target. Construction activity is expected to continue over the coming months as work progresses on the flyover, underpass and associated pedestrian facilities.
Once operational, the project could provide a more direct connection between Dr E Moses Road and Dr Annie Besant Road while improving access around the Nehru Science Centre and Nehru Planetarium.
For Mumbai’s central and south-central areas, the Rs 285-crore project represents another effort to address traffic pressure by creating new links within the existing urban network, rather than relying solely on widening already congested roads.
