The northern expansion of Mumbai’s Coastal Road towards Bhayander has been given a March 2029 completion target, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, as the state advances a broader programme of transport and infrastructure projects across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The proposed extension is intended to eventually create a signal-free road connection stretching from Marine Drive through Mumbai’s coastal corridor to Bhayander. The wider northern network includes the Bandra-Versova-Bhayander corridor and the Dahisar-Bhayander link, which will strengthen connectivity between Mumbai’s western suburbs and the Mira-Bhayander region.
A major component of the project is the 4.58-km Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road, planned as an elevated corridor connecting Dahisar West with Bhayander West. About 1.45 km of the alignment will fall within Mumbai, while the remaining 3.13 km will be located within the jurisdiction of the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation.
The corridor is planned to have a width of 45 metres and is being executed under a Design and Build model. The construction schedule has been estimated at 42 months, including the monsoon period.
The link is expected to provide an alternative route between the western suburbs and Mira-Bhayander, potentially easing pressure on existing roads that currently handle substantial traffic between the two areas. Civic authorities have previously indicated a December 2028 target for completing the Dahisar-Bhayander section, while additional work at the Bhayander interchange remains part of the overall connectivity plan.
The coastal road expansion forms part of a larger infrastructure programme covering Mumbai and surrounding areas. Other projects highlighted by the state include the proposed Thane-Borivali twin tunnels and connectivity improvements involving the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Bandra Kurla Complex and Mumbai airport.
The existing southern Coastal Road has become an important component of Mumbai’s road network since its phased opening. The proposed northern extension is expected to add another major route for traffic travelling between South Mumbai, the western suburbs and areas further north.
Achieving the March 2029 target will require coordination among several interconnected infrastructure components, with the ultimate objective of establishing a longer, continuous signal-free road corridor towards Bhayander.
