The Central Railway (CR) is planning to upgrade its signalling infrastructure at more than 14 suburban railway stations across Mumbai following the fire at the relay hut at Kanjurmarg station on October 26. The proposed measures include installing a more robust electronic interlocking system to improve operational safety and minimise the risk of similar disruptions.
The fire severely affected suburban train services, bringing operations to a near standstill for almost an entire day. The blaze damaged cables linked to the signalling network, causing 24 signalling systems to malfunction. During the disruption, three passengers who ventured onto the railway tracks lost their lives.
Following the incident, the railway administration began examining weaknesses in its existing signalling infrastructure and exploring ways to strengthen the system. The proposal to introduce electronic interlocking technology is currently under consideration.
According to railway sources, the upgraded system uses computer-based technology to manage signals, route settings and track points. It reduces dependence on manual intervention, thereby improving the accuracy, reliability and safety of train operations, a CR official said.
Separately, Central Railway has constituted a three-member committee to investigate the Kanjurmarg fire. The panel includes the Senior Divisional Signal and Telecom Engineer, Senior Divisional Safety Officer and Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer. It is expected to submit its findings this week.
The committee will examine the circumstances that led to the fire, determine accountability and suggest preventive measures to avoid similar incidents. Sources indicated that disagreements among different railway departments over responsibility have emerged following the incident.
Meanwhile, restoration work at Kanjurmarg station is continuing. Railway teams are gradually removing the temporary cables installed to resume signalling operations and replacing them with the original cable network.
The work is being undertaken during night hours to ensure that regular local train services face minimal disruption. The proposed signalling upgrade is expected to strengthen Mumbai’s suburban railway network and improve passenger safety.
