Mumbai’s urban mobility is set for a major overhaul with the ambitious Mumbai Ring Road Project, a 90.18-kilometre infrastructure initiative aimed at easing the city’s chronic traffic congestion by 2029. As reported by Times Now, the project will be carried out under a detailed master plan with joint efforts from key agencies including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
This comprehensive plan envisions the creation of multiple ring roads that will interlink Mumbai’s core zones and suburbs, alleviating pressure on existing routes while offering seamless alternative pathways for daily commuters and heavy traffic.
The project’s five distinct ring routes all radiate from Nariman Point, forming loops through some of Mumbai’s most vital transport corridors. The first route connects the Coastal Road, Worli Sewri Connector, Eastern Freeway, and the Orange Gate Tunnel, looping back to Nariman Point. The second route links Nariman Point with the Bandra Worli Sea Link, Western and Eastern Express Highways, Santacruz Chembur Link Road, and the Orange Gate Tunnel.
The third ring includes Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road, Kanjurmarg Junction and the Eastern Freeway Extension. The fourth incorporates the Versova Bandra Sea Link, Versova Dahisar Link Road, and Goregaon Mulund Link Road, while the fifth route extends up to the Thane Coastal Road, Bhayandar Fountain Hotel Connector and Ghodbunder Tunnel before converging again at the Orange Gate.
These extensive corridors are designed to not only decongest major arterial roads but also improve road safety, reduce travel time, and promote more efficient urban connectivity. Significantly, the project supports Mumbai’s long-term vision of sustainable urban development by integrating public transport options, reducing carbon emissions, and enabling eco-friendly travel solutions. Upon its expected completion by 2029, the Mumbai Ring Road Project will stand as a landmark achievement in transforming the city’s transport network into a more connected, accessible, and resilient system.
