August 4, 2025: A vacant MHADA building in Byculla West, classified as a C1 category structure due to its severely dilapidated state, collapsed early Monday morning without causing injuries, according to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB). The structure, known as the Madanpura Post Office Building, was a ground-plus-three (G+3) construction that had been vacated earlier for safety reasons. Initially, portions of the first and third floors at the rear had given way, but by 11:36 am on August 4, officials confirmed the complete collapse.
The incident was first reported at 2:02 am on August 3. Emergency teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, MHADA, BMC ward staff, and an 108 ambulance quickly reached the spot. MHADA officials stayed on site to monitor the situation and ensure safety. Authorities confirmed that no casualties occurred.
In a separate incident in Thane city, four houses were declared dangerous and evacuated after a wall collapsed in the early hours of July 28 at Wagle Estate. According to Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) Disaster Management Cell chief Yasin Tadvi, “Upon inspection, it was found that the remaining structure of the collapsed house and three adjoining houses were in a dangerous condition. Immediate preventive steps were taken to avoid any accident.”
The wall of a house owned by Shakuntala Yadav had collapsed onto a neighbouring property owned by Pandurang Padekar, with debris also falling into a nearby drain. “We immediately evacuated all four houses as a safety measure and advised the affected residents to temporarily take shelter with their relatives living nearby,” Tadvi added.
The Wagle Ward Committee and Civil Construction Department will carry out permanent remedial measures, while Mahavitaran officials inspected the site to rule out electrical hazards.
