August 18, 2025: The ambitious Versova-Bandra Sea Link, aimed at transforming urban mobility along Mumbai’s western corridor, is advancing steadily, with officials confirming approximately 60% completion. The project is on track for delivery within the next two years, promising to ease traffic congestion along the Western Expressway by providing a parallel, high-capacity transport corridor.
Maharashtra Chief Minister recently highlighted the latest updates at a real estate and infrastructure event, noting that the sea link, along with its planned extension connecting Dahisar to Bhayander, will enhance regional connectivity and stimulate economic activity.
“This extensive sea link network will function as a fully parallel corridor to the Western Expressway, which currently handles around 60% of the city’s vehicular traffic,” a senior infrastructure official said. “Once operational, it will distribute traffic efficiently and reduce environmental impacts from congestion.”
Authorities are also advancing plans for a northern ring road connecting Bhayander to Vardhavan Port via Virar, with construction expected to begin within the next year. The corridor is projected to facilitate smoother freight movement, ease urban bottlenecks, and support industrial and logistical growth in the northern Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
In parallel, Maharashtra’s urban development strategy includes two new satellite cities: Third Mumbai in Navi Mumbai, focusing on technology and education, and Fourth Mumbai in the northern MMR, designed as a logistics and port hub.
Third Mumbai will feature a 300-acre Education City near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, hosting around 100,000 students in partnership with 12 global universities. Fourth Mumbai, anchored by the under-construction Vardhavan Port—set to be India’s largest port—will emerge as a major commercial and logistical nucleus.
Coordinated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), these projects aim to promote sustainable urban expansion, optimise land use, and enhance equitable, accessible infrastructure. With the Versova-Bandra Sea Link on schedule, Mumbai’s broader infrastructure vision is set to reshape mobility, economic corridors, and urban living.
