Indian Railways is working on Kavach 5.0, the latest version of its indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, specifically for Mumbai’s suburban railway network. The upgraded safety technology is expected to enhance train operations, improve reliability and support the city’s high-frequency local train services.
Confirming the development, Dr Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Central Railway, told Indianexpress.com that Kavach 5.0 is currently under development and will be introduced on Mumbai’s suburban network once it is ready for deployment.
The Ministry of Railways had announced Kavach 5.0 in April 2025 as an advanced train safety and signalling system tailored for suburban rail operations. The upgraded technology is expected to enable trains to operate with reduced headway, allowing more frequent services while maintaining high safety standards.
Referring to the next-generation Vande Bharat trains, the Ministry stated, “Vande Bharat 4.0 is envisaged to incorporate Kavach 5.0, the next evolution of India’s indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, as part of its advanced safety and technology framework,” it said in a statement.
Mumbai’s suburban railway system, jointly operated by the Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR), is one of the busiest commuter rail networks in the world. Together, the two zones operate 3,234 EMU suburban services every day, including both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned trains.
Western Railway runs 1,414 suburban services, including 145 AC EMU services, while Central Railway operates 1,820 services, of which 120 are AC EMU services. The network also includes 266 fifteen-car EMU services, which provide greater passenger capacity, particularly during peak travel hours.
Kavach was adopted as the National Automatic Train Protection system by Indian Railways in July 2020. The technology helps locomotive pilots maintain prescribed speed limits by automatically applying brakes if required and also enables safer train operations during adverse weather conditions.
The first field trials of Kavach on passenger trains began in February 2016. Based on operational experience with Version 3.2, the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) approved the specifications for Kavach Version 4.0 on July 16, 2024.
According to Indian Railways, Kavach 4.0 includes enhanced location accuracy, improved signal information in larger railway yards, station-to-station communication through optical fibre connectivity and direct integration with existing electronic interlocking systems. Kavach 5.0 is expected to build on these capabilities to meet the operational demands of Mumbai’s suburban rail network.
