Netizens Question Value Of Crore Worth Flats As Mumbai Sinks In Monsoon

August 19, 2025: Mumbai was paralysed on Tuesday after torrential rains flooded major roads and disrupted public transport, prompting widespread anger from residents who took to social media to vent their frustration. The downpour once again exposed the city’s fragile infrastructure, raising questions over preparedness despite years of monsoon warnings.

“This is South Mumbai — Prabhadevi — where you buy Rs 15–20 crore flats. Mumbai rains don’t care,” wrote user @s_r_khandelwal, sharing visuals of waterlogged streets in one of the city’s priciest neighbourhoods.

In Andheri West, a video shared by news agency ANI showed a luxury Mercedes stranded in floodwaters, causing further congestion. Commuters reported delays of several hours, while schools and colleges across Mumbai and the Konkan region remained closed following a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas.

The disruption also reignited debate around work-from-home policies. Many office-goers questioned why remote working was not made the default option during extreme weather conditions. “Every monsoon, Mumbai’s working class battles long commutes, waterlogging and broken trains,” wrote @Shar_worry_. “WFH exists, but needs permission every time. The ‘Mumbai spirit’ isn’t resilience. It’s survival in a broken system.”

Others urged residents to exercise caution. “Stay safe Mumbai. Venture out only if it’s very important. Try to WFH if possible. It’s very heavy downpour here at Royal Palm estate,” wrote @vinayverma99. Meanwhile, some social media users chose humour over outrage, flooding timelines with memes that highlighted the absurdity of spending crores on luxury flats while still being stranded by annual monsoon chaos.

For many Mumbaikars, Tuesday’s scenes were a stark reminder that despite its global city tag and soaring property prices, the financial capital continues to sink under its seasonal rainfall.
