September 3, 2025: Pune’s long-awaited Sinhagad Road flyover, a 2.6-kilometre stretch from Rajaram Bridge to Fun Time Theatre, was formally inaugurated on Monday (1 September), offering commuters significant relief from chronic traffic congestion.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who inaugurated both the first and second phases of the project, described the development as a Ganesh Chaturthi gift for the people of Pune. He emphasised that the flyover would not only ease the movement of vehicles but also contribute to reducing air pollution along one of the city’s busiest traffic corridors.
Sinhagad Road serves as a vital arterial link, connecting areas such as Dhayri, Narhe, Khadakwasla, Vadgaon Budruk, and Nanded City, while also providing access to the Mumbai–Bengaluru National Highway. With more than 1.5 lakh vehicles using the stretch daily, and physical constraints caused by the Mutha River on one side and hills on the other preventing road expansion, the demand for a flyover had been longstanding.
The project was undertaken by the Pune Municipal Corporation at a total cost of Rs 118.37 crore. Its foundation stone was laid in September 2021 by Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Executed in three phases, the scheme includes a 520-metre flyover at Rajaram Pool Chowk (phase one), a 2.1-kilometre stretch between Vitthalwadi and Fun Time Theatre (phase two), and a 1.5-kilometre section linking Veer Shivaji Kashid Chowk to Prakash Vitthal Inamdar Chowk (phase three).
Travel time across the six major junctions on Sinhagad Road has now reduced from around 30 minutes to just five or six minutes. Additional features include upgraded three-lane roads beneath the flyover, new pavements, parking facilities, and beautification works, which will be maintained under CSR initiatives for the next five years.
