India’s First Bullet Train Between Mumbai And Ahmedabad To Begin Operations Soon

September 3, 2025: India’s first bullet train project, connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad, has reached a significant milestone with the construction of its 12 state-of-the-art stations nearing completion. The Ministry of Railways confirmed the progress this week, noting that each station has been designed to be environmentally sustainable while reflecting local cultural identity. Officials said the facilities would combine modern technology with traditional aesthetics, aiming to “redefine passenger comfort”.

The 508-kilometre high-speed rail corridor will pass through Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. It will feature four stations in Maharashtra and eight in Gujarat, including key hubs such as Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad. Once operational, the limited-stop service will connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad in just 2 hours and 7 minutes. A service stopping at all stations will take 2 hours and 58 minutes – a dramatic reduction compared with current rail and road journeys.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that services would commence “very soon”, although the exact inauguration date has not been confirmed. Ticket prices are expected to fall between Rs 3,000 and Rs 5,000 depending on class and service type, placing the project in line with premium air travel while offering greater convenience.

The project is being executed by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) with Japanese technical expertise, bringing the Shinkansen model of high-speed travel to India. Engineers emphasise that the introduction of bullet trains will not only cut journey times but also set a benchmark in terms of safety, reliability and passenger experience.

As construction nears its final stages, anticipation is growing for the official launch of India’s most ambitious transport infrastructure project to date, one that is expected to transform connectivity between two of the country’s most dynamic economic hubs.
