Nariman Point To Mira-Bhayandar In 30 Minutes: Coastal Road Project Moves Forward

September 22, 2025: Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced a major breakthrough for the Mumbai Coastal Road project with the handover of 53.17 acres of land by the Union Salt Land Department to the state government. This land will be used to construct a 60-meter-wide road connecting Dahisar to Bhayandar, a critical link in extending the corridor from Nariman Point to Uttan and beyond.

“After a long struggle, our persistent follow-up with both central and state departments has paid off,” Sarnaik said. “The coastal road dream is now closer to reality.”

The Dahisar-Bhayandar stretch will connect seamlessly with the ongoing Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) coastal road project. Once complete, the network will provide direct connectivity from Nariman Point to Mira-Bhayandar, with further links to Vasai and Virar.

Construction has already begun, with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) awarded the contract. The project, estimated at Rs 3,000 crore, will be fully funded by the BMC and is slated for completion in three years.

The original alignment of the coastal road extended along the shoreline from Uttan to Virar. However, strong opposition from local fishing communities, concerned about the impact on their livelihoods, prompted a rethink. The state government has since revised the route to run further inland, extending from Uttan to Dahisar via Mira-Bhayandar before reaching Vasai-Virar.

“We have addressed the legitimate concerns of the fishing community,” Sarnaik said. “The revised alignment balances infrastructure development with respect for traditional livelihoods. It is a win-win for all stakeholders.”

Officials believe the extended road will transform suburban mobility in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Commuters from Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai, and Virar will be able to reach central Mumbai in just 30 minutes, turning these suburban areas into major residential and commercial hubs.
