September 27, 2025: India’s first bullet train is moving closer to reality, with a 50-km stretch between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat slated for completion by 2027. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed on Saturday that the full Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed line will be operational by 2029, reducing the journey to just 2 hours and 7 minutes.
During a visit to the under-construction Surat bullet train station, Vaishnaw inspected ongoing track installation work and the project’s first turnout system. He described the overall progress as “very good” and outlined the project timeline: the initial 50 km section by 2027, the Thane–Ahmedabad stretch by 2028, and the entire Mumbai–Ahmedabad route by 2029.
The main line trains will run at a top speed of 320 kmph, while loop line services will operate at 80 kmph. Advanced technology is being deployed to ensure safety and stability, including vibration control systems designed to keep trains steady even during extreme weather or seismic activity.
“All heavy construction work at Surat station is complete,” Vaishnaw said. “Finishing and utility works are progressing rapidly alongside track laying.” He highlighted the installation of the first turnout, explaining that the project uses innovative technologies such as roller bearings for smoother track movement and composite-material sleepers for enhanced durability.
The minister also emphasised the project’s potential economic impact, noting that the bullet train will connect major cities along the route and boost regional development. “When Japan introduced its first bullet train, it transformed the economy. We expect a similar effect here,” he said.
Looking ahead, Vaishnaw confirmed that new bullet train corridors will be developed across India, with three planned in the north, one in the east, one in the south, in addition to the western Mumbai–Ahmedabad line, fulfilling promises made in the BJP manifesto.
