September 30, 2025: Construction of India’s first bullet train corridor, linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad, is moving ahead rapidly. The 508-kilometre Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor will pass through Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli, marking a landmark development in the country’s transport infrastructure.
Once operational, the bullet train is expected to drastically reduce travel times. Passengers travelling between Mumbai and Surat will reach their destination in just one hour, a reduction of more than 100 minutes compared with current services. Presently, the fastest option is the 12951 New Delhi–Tejas Rajdhani Express, which takes 2 hours 43 minutes, followed by the 22961 Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express at 2 hours 53 minutes.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the convenience for commuters. “Practically, from Surat you can travel to Mumbai in one hour, complete your work, and return home with time to spend with your family,” he said. Similarly, travel between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will take only 2 hours 7 minutes, offering business travellers and commuters unprecedented flexibility.
The MAHSR corridor is also expected to significantly boost the regional economy. Vaishnaw noted that the project will integrate the economies of major cities along the route—including Mumbai, Thane, Vapi, Surat, Baroda, Anand, and Ahmedabad—into a single, unified economic zone, stimulating growth and development across the region.
The bullet train will serve 12 stations: Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati. Once operational, the project is anticipated to transform travel, enhance regional connectivity, and create substantial economic opportunities along the corridor.
